Alice Starmore the Celtic Collection

Beautiful designs and by using colours a certain way, which is really an art I think,
astonishing sweaters.  I respect a creative mind and love each design in this book.

Inspired by the magic and mysticism of Celtic art, this fabulous collection of knitwear designs for
both adults and children will appeal to knitters everywhere. With each garment beautifully
photographed in color against the stunning scenery of western Ireland, the book is a visual
delight as well as a source of rich patterns complete with clear practical instructions.

A lot of her books are out of print, you can buy them for ridicules prizes second hand
but at Virtual Yarns you can order yarns with patterns.
There are several reprints today, for reasonable prizes.

In November (  2006) I went to the Stitch 'n Bitch event in Rotterdam.
Alice Starmore was going to give a workshop there too and this was a nice opportunity to meet her in person,
for the first time in my live.
For a strange reason I ended up alone with Alice Starmore, in the room for the workshop.
I had a lot of questions and she answered very patiently every one of them. She even did not hesitate to take her
knitting work ( very beautiful of cause ) out of her big knitting bag, to show me, how to weave the yarn at the
back side of your work. I had for a good 20 minutes or so, a private knitting lesson from Alice Starmore,
wow, this was more than I could ever dreamed of.
Then everybody else entered the room and the workshop started, now with 50 women or more.

What happened was; they all have been waiting in the wrong room and I was the only one in the right room.  
( for a nice change )
During the workshop with lots of photo's, she gave us a tiny peek in her live. She showed us, how she was inspired
by nature and how she created her designs. Beautiful photo's with stones and shells, plants with flowers,
all kind of color combinations. She is not only a knitting designer but designs textiles too.

Girl, did I have a pleasant afternoon, thank you Mrs. Starmore for your patience and kindness.

2010 was the worst year I ever could imagine. Not only the crisis but 2 funerals and one of them
was one of my friends. She was younger than me and I have taken care of her, until her last days.
Long conversations about live and dreams and expectations, which never come true. So sad.
I had a hard time, coping with all this feelings of pain and was unable to do something about it.

It slowly changed in 2011 and this will be the greatest year in a long time. Why ??
I am going to be a GRANDMA. And it is a girl. Here she is, the first photo of my granddaughter,
but you can not see her yet, this is her mammy and my daughter in law.
Don't you love this picture, it says it all. I am so touched. I have knitted already some cardigans,
in pink and red, from my basic baby patterns, it is so much fun to knit baby clothes.
I hope to show you a better picture of my granddaughter at the end of may, if all goes well.

Live is full of surprises. My granddaughter was born at the end of march.   
Her name is Eleanor Sofia ( "Noortje" ) and will have to stay in an incubator for the time being.
Beside the fact that she was born 2 months too early and will be needing support for the foreseeable future
she is in excellent health.

It is going very well with little Noortje, still in the hospital but growing fast.  
So we went to eat sushi, don't mind him.  ( Almost impossible to do, who is the clown of the family )
My granddaughter is doing fine, here with daddy  and here with proud grandma sooooo sweet.

She is 8 months now and 8 kg ! Lots of hugs and kisses.

One year, time flies, she is so sweet Thank God for Grandchildren!     Together  on my scooter

This is what we are going to cook for Christmas, so pay attention.

I have made little alterations. The button and buttonhole bands are patterned in an OX cable.
I used Norwegian wool, in 8 different colors, changed colors every 4 rows.
The pattern and wool can be ordered online at Virtual Yarns ( site Alice Starmore ) for £ 120.00 size XL.
I will never pay this amount of money for a sweater or cardigan. But you are free do to so.

At last, I have finished the cardigan for my husband, from my Dale of Norway
book 104, for the second time. ( the first one has gone to my neighbor )
I never knit anything twice, so this time I have used other colors and knitted a vertical cable band.
He is very happy now.

Today I finished `Lismore`.
I used yarn from my stash. I don't like dark sweaters; it doesn't flatter me very well.
(Grayish blond hair) or do I have to say; it used to be blond, long time ago ?
I have quite some uncertainties about this sweater; I would not use chunky yarn a second time, for this kind of project.
I should have stayed closer to the original colors. I should have used blue colors, especially.
The sweater is nice, but not Great, if you know what I mean. The original pattern is great and
my sweater is not exactly, what I wanted to achieve.

When my Dale of Norway cardigan was finished, it seems my tension swatch was not right, after all.
Anyway it did not fit properly, it was too small for me. ( don't know what went wrong with my tension swatch )
So I had given my cardigan to one of my friends ( what are friends for ) with the right size.
She loved it right away. Everybody happy.
This was 3 years ago.
This week her children brought me the cardigan back, she died 3 days after her 52nd birthday.
I will miss her humor, her braveness, I have learned a lot from her this last year.
The long talks about live and death, the little things in live, like the birds in her garden, which she enjoyed so much.
She loved live so much, but had to let go.
Her strong mind in a frail body and her goal to celebrate her last birthday, made a big impression to me.
She was given no more than 12 months of life, but she fought for 15 long months.
Many people will walk in and out of your life, but only true friends leave footprints in your heart. Elaeanor Roosevelt.

I knitted one for my husband, with a rib band, which was not in the original pattern.
My next door neighbor, who moved out some years ago, came by, to visit us, looked at the cardigan, and said;
I have never seen such a beautiful cardigan. ( very clever of him ) Well folks, to make a long story, short;
I have to knit one for my husband, again.
